The Montagu's harrier nests on the ground.

It builds its nests mainly in areas cultivated with cereals and fodder, scrubland and uncultivated land, either alone or in colonies. Clutches consist of three to five eggs and are laid in April and May.

When the nest is destroyed, some birds may lay a second clutch. Incubation lasts 27 to 40 days, and the chicks leave the nest around 28 to 42 days later, becoming independent two weeks later.

The average productivity of this species is two fledglings per pair.
