Save the harrier

SAVE THE MONTAGU'S HARRIER

Everyone counts and can help save the Montag's harrier from extinction.

Farmers, shepherds, agroforestry managers and rural landowners play a key role and are crucial to the success of the "Save the Montagu's harrier" campaign.
And all of us, consumers, producers or traders of cereal-based foods, can also protect this bird of prey that flies in fields.

ARE YOU A FARMER?

  • HARVESTING: ATTENTION TO BE PAID

    HARVESTING: ATTENTION TO BE PAID

The Montagu's harrier nests on the ground, mainly in agricultural fields with cereals and fodder. Every year, many nests, eggs and chicks are unintentionally destroyed by agricultural machinery during the cutting of cereals or fodder.

    During harvesting

↗ Be careful and watch for any birds taking flight from the ground and try to locate the nest.
↗ If you see the bird or find any nest, notify the project team.
↗ Allow protective nets to be installed around the nests to safeguard them during agricultural activities and prevent predation.

    Government agri-environmental support

↗ By collaborating and protecting the nests on your land, you can obtain government support.

PRODUCE MORE SUSTAINABLE AND VALUE-ADDED CEREALS

To save this species from imminent extinction and increase national cereal production, grow cereal varieties that are better suited to their reproductive cycle and adapted to the climate of the region where they are grown. They are more productive because they are more resistant to climate change and disease, and are therefore less exposed to pesticides. They are healthier and have greater nutritional value.

Grow the cereal varieties selected by the project.

Join cereal producer organisations that promote the conservation of this species and the balance and sustainability of the fields.

    GET TO KNOW THIS ALLY

This bird is an ally of farmers. A single pair of Montagu's harriers hunts more than 1,000 animals harmful to crops, such as insects and rodents, during a breeding season!

What else does it do for you, for all of us?

This species can also nest in low scrub in mountainous areas and uncultivated land subject to management measures to reduce the risk of fire or to enhance grazing areas.

If you spot a Montagu's harrier or find nests on your land, please notify the project team.

If you intend to cut or carry out controlled burning initiatives, please contact us, as you may have nests on your property.

Allow the project technicians to take measures to protect the nests (install protective nets or rescue them) in order to safeguard them during activities and prevent predation
